A Personal Journey to Strength and Clarity

After I had heart surgery, my heart surgeon recommended that I try restorative yoga. This practice helped me regain my strength in a gentle and supportive way. More importantly, it provided a space to keep my mind clear and focused during recovery. The gentle stretches and mindful breathing techniques were so helpful for my mental health, helping me reconnect with my body and heal from the inside out. Over time, it became a key part of my wellness routine. Yoga taught me to listen to my body, be patient with myself, and appreciate the power of breath. Every morning, I try to get on my yoga mat, even if it’s for 5 minutes. It starts my day by moving my body (which is so important) and gets my mind prepared for the tasks the day will bring.

Bringing Yoga into Your Life

If you’re considering adding yoga to your wellness routine, here are a few tips to get started:

  1. Start Slow: Begin with gentle classes or online tutorials that focus on foundational poses and breathing techniques. Also, see the Yoga Pose Cards I have linked below. They helped me get started when I had no idea what to do.
  2. Find a Style That Suits You: There are many styles of yoga, from the vigorous Vinyasa to the calming Yin or Restorative. Explore different styles to find what resonates with you.
  3. Listen to Your Body: Honor your body’s signals and modify poses as needed. Yoga is about progress, not perfection. Even stretching and doing simple poses like child pose is Yoga.
  4. Create a Sacred Space: Designate a quiet, comfortable space in your home for your practice. Fill it with things that inspire and relax you, like candles, plants, or soothing music. I like to use this Essential Oil Diffuser when I am doing yoga. I switch it up, but love pure Lavender Oil in my diffuser by plant therapy. It helps me to relax and be mindful.
  5. Be Consistent: Consistency is key. Even a few minutes of yoga each day can make a significant difference in your overall well-being. I usually do yoga for about 15 minutes in the morning. It doesn’t need to be an hour-long session.
