I absolutely love traveling and discovering new places. I also love trying new things and creating unforgettable memories. But let’s be honest; staying healthy while on the go can be quite a challenge. Additionally, road trip, airport, and gas station snacks are often loaded with ingredients that make me feel less than my best. Since I have several autoimmune diseases and have had heart surgery, I understand the importance of nourishing my body with clean, whole ingredients. So, I made a healthy snacks for travel guide to share with you. These snacks have helped me stay healthier while traveling. Here are some delicious, wholesome snacks that will keep you energized and ready for all your adventures!
First things first, why should we care about healthy travel snacks? Here’s the deal:
Seed Oils and Refined Sugars:
The Sneaky Villains Seed oils (like canola and soybean) often hide in processed snacks and can cause inflammation. And don’t get me started on refined sugars – they spike your blood sugar, then send it crashing down, leaving you feeling blah. No thanks!
Ingredient Labels: Your Best Friend
A little tip: Always check the ingredient labels. If you can’t pronounce something or it sounds like it belongs in a science lab, put it back on the shelf. Simple, whole ingredients are the way to go.
The 80/20 Rule: Balance, Not Perfection
Stick to healthy choices 80% of the time and treat yourself the other 20%. Consequently, you can enjoy your trip without feeling guilty or sluggish. I love eating healthy snacks because I can indulge in dessert and an extra drink, knowing I made better choices elsewhere. Let’s be honest; life needs to be balanced, and we are only human. Don’t focus on being perfect; try to make better choices, one decision at a time.

Choosing Healthy Travel Snacks
Doesn’t Have To Be a Chore.
Here are some easy tips to help guide you:
Read the Ingredients:
Always read the ingredient list. Look for whole ingredients that you can recognize and pronounce. Avoid snacks with a long list of additives, preservatives, and artificial ingredients. I like to find snacks with the shortest ingredient list possible. If it’s full of things you can’t pronounce, move on.
Ditch the Seed Oils:
Seed oils like canola, soybean, and sunflower are often highly processed and can contribute to inflammation. Instead, look for snacks made with healthier fats like coconut oil, avocado oil, or olive oil. Your body will thank you.
Skip the Refined Sugars:
Refined sugars can cause blood sugar spikes and crashes, leading to energy slumps. Choose snacks sweetened with natural sweeteners like honey, maple syrup, or dates, which do not contain added sugar.
Whole Ingredients Rule:
Whole ingredients are minimally processed and retain most of their natural nutrients. Snacks made with whole ingredients are generally healthier and more nourishing.
Pack Protein and Fiber:
Protein and fiber are essential for keeping you full and satisfied. Choose snacks that are high in protein and fiber to keep your energy levels stable and prevent overeating.
Tips for Healthy Travel
In addition to packing healthy snacks, here are some healthy eating tips while traveling
Plan Ahead:
A little planning goes a long way. Research restaurants and grocery stores at your destination that offer healthy options. Having a plan will make it easier to stick to your healthy eating goals.
Stay Hydrated:
Traveling can be dehydrating, especially if you’re flying. Therefore, drink plenty of water, and consider bringing a reusable water bottle to refill throughout your journey. You can add my favorite sea salt to your drink for extra electrolytes.
Avoid Unhealthy Airport Food:
Airport food is often loaded with unhealthy ingredients and filled with fast-food restaurants. Plane snacks are also usually filled with unhealthy ingredients. By packing your snacks, you can avoid the temptation of unhealthy options and ensure you have nutritious choices.
Listen to Your Body:
Traveling can be exhausting, so it’s important to listen to your body and give it what it needs. If you’re tired, rest. If you’re hungry, eat a healthy snack. Taking care of yourself will help you enjoy your travels more.
Enjoy Local Eats:
Part of traveling is trying new foods. Don’t be afraid to indulge a little. Just remember the 80/20 rule and try to balance indulgences with healthy choices.
