The Importance of Detoxing in Functional Medicine and Holistic Wellness
Detoxing is crucial for maintaining and improving health, especially in our modern world filled with toxins. From the air we breathe to the food we eat, our bodies are constantly exposed to harmful substances. These toxins can overwhelm our natural detoxification pathways, leading to chronic illnesses, autoimmune conditions, and even cancer. Integrative and functional medicine practitioners, like Dr. Mark Hyman and Dr. Erin Leigh Connealy, emphasize the importance of daily detoxification strategies to support our body’s ability to heal and thrive.
Detox Bath
Shower cap | Face mask | Bath tray | Under eye patches | Loofahs | Bath Pillow | Aztec clay Apple cider vinegar | Epsom Salt | Baking Soda
There’s no better way to relax and unwind than a warm bath. But did you know that you can add products to your bath to purify your body and help with toxin elimination and improve your overall health ? By combining products like Epsom salt, apple cider vinegar, baking soda, or natural clay, you can create your own detox bath! Epsom salt and baking soda help reduce inflammation and relax muscles, while apple cider vinegar promotes digestion and detoxification. The clay absorbs toxins and impurities from the skin, leaving you feeling refreshed and revitalized!
A detox bath is easy to incorporate into a routine! Simply start your bath, and be sure to set the bath to warm or as hot as you can handle. Be mindful of your body and pick what temp is right for you! Add the ingredients and soak for at least 20 minutes, and let the detoxification begin! Give it a try, your body will thank you!
Detox Bath Recipe:
2 cups epsom salt | 2 TBSP apple cider vinegar | 1/2 cup aztec clay
However, the clay is a brownish-green color and will leave a residue in the tub after. It easily washes down with water so I usually rinse the tub after, as it has never clogged my tub. I have been using this recipe for years. If you don’t feel comfortable still, you can use the recipe below.
Detox Bath Recipe WITHOUT Clay:
2 cups epsom salt | 2 TBSP apple cider vinegar | 1 cup baking soda

Hydration is essential for flushing out toxins from your body. After all, our bodies are 60% water! A good rule of thumb is to consume half your body weight in ounces up to your full body weight in ounces, or aim for 8-10 glasses of water per day. Adding lemon and mineral salts to your water can make a big difference! Remember to increase your intake if you’re physically active, sweat a lot, or live in a hot climate.
Get Moving
Regular exercise can help boost your immune system and support the detox process. Try to exercise for at least 30 minutes per day! I love incorporating yoga into my daily routine. It stimulates the lymphatic system, helping to increase circulation and allowing your body to eliminate toxins and heavy metals more efficiently. That’s only one of the benefits of yoga, to read about more you can click HERE!
Castor Oil Pack
Another holistic way I like to detox is by using my castor oil set. Castor oil works by stimulating your lymph and liver health function by increasing your lymphocyte count, which then allows the body to speed up the process of removing toxins from your tissues. Lymphatic congestion is a key factor in inflammation and disease. I like to sleep with my castor oil wrap on and have been impressed with the benefits! It’s a great tool for promoting overall health and well-being, aiding in detoxifying your liver and more. You can put a heating pad over the top of it to give it a kick-start and sweat out some toxins, too. Warning: it can be messy! I have found that it’s best to throw on an old T-shirt on top and have had no problems.
Sweat It Out
Using a sauna is one of my favorite ways to unwind and detoxify! The intense heat causes me to sweat like crazy, helping to get rid of all the toxins and heavy metals I’ve been holding onto. The best part is it’s so easy to do- I simply hop in, turn up the heat, and let my body do its thing! Click HERE to learn about more sauna benefits!
Lymphatic Massage, Gua Sha, Lymphatic Cream and Dry Brushing
Lymphatic massage is a gentle technique used to stimulate the flow of lymph fluid, which helps the body eliminate toxins, reduce swelling, and improve circulation. It involves light, rhythmic strokes along the lymphatic pathways, encouraging the movement of lymph fluid through the body. This type of massage can be done professionally or at home using specific tools and techniques.
Gua Sha
Gua sha is an ancient Chinese healing technique that involves scraping the skin with a massage tool to improve circulation and promote lymphatic drainage. Using a gua sha tool, typically made of jade or rose quartz, you can gently scrape your skin in upward and outward strokes. This not only helps reduce puffiness and improve circulation but also enhances the detoxification process by promoting the movement of lymph fluid.
Lymphatic Cream
Lymphatic creams are specially formulated products that support lymphatic drainage. They often contain ingredients like arnica, horse chestnut, and essential oils that help reduce inflammation and improve circulation. Applying a lymphatic cream during a lymphatic massage or after using a gua sha tool can enhance the benefits of these practices. Simply apply the cream to the desired areas and massage gently to stimulate lymph flow and support detoxification.
Dry Brushing
I also like to detox is by using my dry brush. Dry brushing helps exfoliate skin, improve circulation, reduce inflammation, and more!
Healthy Eating + Gut Health
Monk Fruit Sweetener | Stevia | Avocado Oil | Vanilla Sweet Drops | Chocolate Sweet Drops | Coconut Oil Maple Syrup | Ghee | Honey
A healthy diet plays a crucial role in maintaining overall well-being. Eating a diet rich in antioxidants can help eliminate toxins, while a balanced intake of whole foods, fruits, and vegetables supports the body’s natural detoxification process. Focus on whole, unprocessed foods and limit sugary and processed foods to maximize these benefits. Additionally, incorporating fiber-rich foods like whole grains, legumes, and leafy greens can help keep the digestive system running smoothly. Probiotics found in fermented foods like yogurt, sauerkraut, and kimchi can support gut health and enhance detoxification processes. For more on healthy eating, click HERE!
Binders
Using a binder daily is essential for promoting detoxification and overall wellness, especially in functional medicine. I personally take two binders everyday. Binders, such as activated charcoal, bentonite clay, or chlorella, work by binding to toxins, heavy metals, and other harmful substances in the digestive tract, preventing their reabsorption into the bloodstream and aiding in their safe elimination from the body. This process helps reduce the toxic burden on the liver and other detoxification organs, supporting optimal health and reducing symptoms associated with toxin overload, such as fatigue, brain fog, and digestive issues. To use a binder effectively, take it on an empty stomach, at least two- four hours away from meals, medications, or supplements, to avoid interference with nutrient absorption. It’s also crucial to drink plenty of water throughout the day to facilitate the removal of bound toxins and support overall hydration. Incorporating a binder into your daily routine can be a powerful tool in maintaining a clean and balanced system, promoting long-term health and vitality. Make sure to check with your doctor to see if this is right for you and your health. This information is what has helped me for my body. Do your own research and see if it is right for your body.
The Power of Sleep
Quality sleep is a crucial component of any detox regimen. During sleep, your body works to repair and regenerate tissues, process and eliminate toxins, and balance hormones. Ensuring you get 7-9 hours of restorative sleep each night can significantly enhance your body’s natural detoxification processes. Create a sleep-friendly environment by maintaining a cool, dark, and quiet room, and establish a regular sleep schedule. Avoiding screens and caffeine before bed can also help improve sleep quality.
Mindfulness and Stress Reduction
Chronic stress can impair your body’s ability to detoxify effectively. Practices like meditation, deep breathing, and mindfulness can help reduce stress levels, supporting your body’s detox pathways. Taking time each day to focus on relaxation and mental clarity can improve overall health and well-being. Consider incorporating mindfulness practices into your daily routine, such as a few minutes of meditation in the morning or deep breathing exercises before bed.
Detoxifying Your Home
Our living environments can also contribute to toxin exposure. Simple changes like using natural cleaning products, avoiding synthetic fragrances, and ensuring good ventilation can help reduce the toxic load in your home. Consider investing in houseplants known for their air-purifying properties, such as snake plants, spider plants, and peace lilies. Regularly cleaning air filters and minimizing the use of plastics can also make a big difference.
As you embark on your detox journey, remember to listen to your body and take care of it! Trust me when I say detoxing will have you feeling brand new. I love incorporating it into my routine, and hope you find as much joy in it as I do!
